1. TBS CROSS DIG:

Generative AI Meets the Digital Footprint
Sandra Matz on Personalization and Human Agency
TBS CROSS DIG Interview × Japanese Publication Seminar for Mindmasters | August 27, 2026

Over the past few decades, the internet, smartphones and IoT laid the foundation for data-intensive business models such as social media and e-commerce, and with them an enormous supply of digital footprints from both people and machines. Generative AI marks a different kind of shift. The earlier wave created the supply of data; generative AI expands the capacity to use it in three ways.
1. Lower barrier to use
Predictive and recommendation models once required specialist expertise in data science, data engineering and analytics. Generative AI lets non-specialists interpret data and create new content using ordinary language.
2. Wider range of data
Companies have long collected audio, video, sensor data, text and structured records, but only a fraction could be processed with AI. Generative AI can analyze and generate across these formats.
3. From groups to individuals
Earlier systems asked which segment a customer belongs to. Generative AI can interpret signals about one person and generate a tailored message, offer or interface for that person at very low marginal cost. Understanding and influence now come from the same technology, often in a single step.
Professor Sandra Matz's research shows why this matters. Even modest digital traces, such as what people click, buy or write, can reveal patterns in personality, preference and likely response. Combined with generative AI, this capability is no longer confined to a few large platforms: any company, in any sector, can begin to use it.
For companies, this creates a powerful opportunity to understand customers more deeply and design more relevant services. The same capability raises a management question: how much should a company know about an individual, and how much influence should it exercise with that knowledge?
1. TBS CROSS DIG: How Much Can a Digital Footprint Reveal?
In the morning, Professor Matz joined Ryuichiro Takeshita for a TBS CROSS DIG interview that translated research on AI and psychology into questions a broad audience could recognize. How accurately can AI infer personality and behavior? Can highly personalized messages influence decisions without people fully noticing? How can individuals preserve agency in digital environments built around prediction and recommendation?
As digital footprints become inputs for psychological inference, generative AI can combine analysis and content generation within the same workflow. Customer understanding can move directly from prediction to individualized action.
Deeper customer understanding can make services more relevant. It also forces companies to decide how far they should go in using that understanding to shape choices.

2. Mindmasters Seminar: Personalization Becomes a Management Design Choice
Later that day, more than 70 participants registered for the Japanese publication seminar for Mindmasters. The discussion moved across AI, psychology, privacy, consumer behavior and human decision-making. A central theme was how companies should design personalization as generative AI makes individualized communication easier and cheaper.
Generative AI can choose information for a person and adapt how that information is framed to personality or psychological characteristics. As this capability spreads, companies face three strategic choices:
- Which data to use: access to data does not by itself establish a reason to use it; the choice should fit the customer relationship and the purpose of the service.
- What to optimize: conversion and engagement are measurable, while trust, long-term relationships and exposure to diverse options also matter.
- Where to set limits: stronger recommendation and persuasion can reduce the space people have to compare alternatives, explore unfamiliar ideas or form preferences independently.
The Q&A also explored whether highly personalized recommendations could narrow the range of preferences people develop over time, and whether widespread use of similar AI systems could make choices and creative outputs more homogeneous. The tension between short-term relevance and long-term agency applies far beyond marketing. Financial services, healthcare, education, HR and other domains increasingly use AI to support human decisions.

3. Put Data-Use Choices at the Center of AI Strategy
Mindmasters describes a world in which AI can understand people with increasing precision. As these capabilities reach companies of every size and sector, what each company chooses to do with that understanding will shape the next phase of AI adoption.
NTT DATA Institute of Management Consulting sees these choices - which data to use, what to optimize, and where to set limits - as part of strategy, not an afterthought. The combination of generative AI and digital footprints can create much deeper customer insight. The challenge is to convert that insight into value while preserving the trust and agency on which long-term relationships depend.
