Designing for Population Decline, Super-Aging, and Solo Societies

Service Overview

Population dynamics are one of the most direct social changes affecting regional characteristics. For instance, excessive population decline and aging raise concerns about the sustainability of regions.

Additionally, household composition has also seen significant changes in the medium to long term. During the high economic growth period to the bubble era, nuclear families progressed to comprise 40% of all households. However, this ratio has since declined, and currently, single-person households account for 40% of all households, a trend expected to continue for some time.

At NTT Data Institute of Management Consulting Inc., we capture these societal changes while envisioning the ideal lifestyle from the perspective of residents, seeking and proposing ways to create a sustainable society.

Consulting Approach

<Measures Against Declining Birthrates and Comprehensive Regional Development>
NTT Data Institute of Management Consulting Inc., is continuously engaged in measures to combat declining birthrates through a "regional approach" advanced by the Cabinet Office's Digital Garden City National Concept Realization Secretariat. Along with local public organizations nationwide addressing population decline and declining birthrates, we are exploring ways to create regions that fulfill the "hopes" of their residents, with a focus on industries and living environments.

<Designing Businesses and Communities for a Solo Society>
The increase in single-person households is leading to more individuals enjoying their personal time, raising concerns about excessive loneliness and vulnerability during disasters. Given these circumstances, NTT Data Institute of Management Consulting Inc., proposes societal systems and community designs that balance freedom with safety and security. Through our consulting services, we are advancing the verification of the feasibility of these proposals.

Expected Outcomes

  • Balancing measures against declining birthrates with individual well-being
  • Clarification and realization of a societal vision where people with various living arrangements can live comfortably
